CatalinaOwner/Builder: Gordon Spencer
Span: 104" (1:12 scale) As is usual with any of Gordon's aircraft, the story behind this one is bizarre and fascinating. Gordon built the fuselage by scaling up a 1:72 scale plastic kit, and constructing a solid foam plug. When completed, the plug was covered with two layers of 1/16" balsa sheet and a layer of light fibregalss. The foam was then scooped out of the interior of the fuselage, and control equipment fitted. The wing is two-piece foam-core construction with a balsa skin. The resulting aircraft is docile to fly with excellent single-engine performance. |
